Bollywood, the cinema of dance

Cinema is one of the industries that moves a lot of money in the world. Contrary to what you might think, India – and not Hollywood, is the country that produces more movies per year in the world. Regardless, Bollywood cinema (Hindu cinema) continues to be a great enigma for the average spectator, since it does not have the same promotion as the North American industry.

Bollywood, the cinema of dance

The Indian movies have nothing to do with the Americans. The storylines tell a love story between two or more characters. There are love affairs, love triangles, and so on. But the hallmarks are its music scenes. Every movie includes typical and traditional Indian dances and songs, mixed with Western pop choreographies. Certainly, it is a strange but incredible mix. The most curious thing is that the scenes are filmed without dialogs and then they are doubled (in India they speak up to 16 languages, so this is the simplest dubbing system).

In India the film industry is so important that their most famous actors are almost revered as gods. In fact, their songs are produced by great artists, both national and international: among the Asians are names like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and among the Westerners, British composer Andrew Lloyd Weber. The actors rarely really sing, but they produce a perfect playback. Usually soundtracks are released some months before the release of the movie. This way, the film’s premiere is always eagerly waited and everyone knows its songs.

The Bollywood dances, especially the older ones, are oriental dances: classical dances, dances of the northern courtesans of India (tawaif) or folk dances. In modern movies, the oriental dances are mixed with the western ones (like the dance routines on MTV or the Broadway musicals). The hero or heroine is often accompanied by a support group of dancers.

The fact is that Bollywood cinema is spreading like wildfire. Increasingly, it has gained more acceptance out of India and the films are shown more and more all over the world. In fact, outside the Indian borders, generations of countries like Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal and Russia have grown up with the Bollywood cinema for years.

Someone rings the bell of your home… they are your friends; it’s a miracle, they’ve come on time! You still do not know what to wear and you have to tidy the flat to make them feel comfortable. You hide the fragile objects, cover the sofa, hide your flatmates stuff, and so on. So, now everything is safe … Are you absolutely sure? When a group of people gather, they drink alcohol and the sound of music envelops the bodies, it can be difficult to leave the place just as it was.

party-drink

In general, when one decides to invite people home, one knows that it’s quiet difficult to keep everything ok. The worst thing you can imagine is that your computer keyboard disappears, or it gets full of beer and cigarette ashes, the WC cover breaks, the neighbour asks your friends to leave or that he has just called the police.

But a party is not always synonymous with garbage; it depends on the people with whom you gather: if they are known or unknown people, if they drink a lot of alcohol, if they are responsible… Sometimes you get good surprises and everything goes well: no glasses are dropped on the carpet, the cat has not run away, sofa hasn’t been slashed and the curtains are still hanging. Despite being drunk, you have to tidy the minimum and wrap everything in bags so that the kitchen is accessible and enjoyable enough for the next day and so you don’t have to tread on spilled wine.

To avoid shocks, you do not have to invite the friends of your friends. Tell your roommate – who is responsible of the flat that if someone breaks anything, he will take charge of the repairs. And if you fear for your computer, you’d better hide it. Because everything could happen when one has consumed alcohol and is in an extreme state of euphoria. But relax; you have to enjoy the party too!

Then the next morning arrives. You just got out of bed, open your dry mouth and try to walk with a terrible headache to the bathroom. You do not recognize it! If you are on your own you’ll probably die in the intent to clean the place up, but if you’re with some friends, who have slept over, ask them for help! Suddenly, some memories of the last night invade your mind: suddenly you remember you had the wise idea to dance on the table… Why are there so many glasses with alcohol remains in the bathroom? Ah yes, that’s when we played ….. We will have to throw away everything and wash the floor twice. For best results, take pictures before and after the party, the transformation can be amazing!

Once upon a time, there was a Persian king called Shahryar. After his wife had cheated on him, he decided that women could not be trusted and he began to marry a series of virgins, whom he executed the morning after. Until one day, he marries the smart and beautiful Scheherazade. She is the daughter of the vizier, and basically the only virgin left in the entire kingdom. On their wedding night, she starts telling the sultan a story, but she doesn’t finish. So he spares her, in order to hear the ending.

The next night, she starts a new tale as soon as the first one ends, again without finishing it. She found a way to keep the interest of the Sultan, and thus continues like this for 1001 nights. By the time she told every single story she knows, the Sultan is already so in love with her that he spares her, and decides she is his truthful queen.

This is how the Tales of 1001 nights begin. The oldest manuscript, written in Arabic and discovered in Syria, dates back to the 800’s. There is still some discussion going on about the origin of the stories, it is generally assumed that they are Persian, although some of the stories seem to have their roots in Indian folklore. The best known stories are without doubt ‘Ali Baba and the forty thieves’ ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Sinbad the Sailor’. These are also the most controversial, because they are not found in the original manuscript. Probably it were European translators who incorporated these stories into the 1001 nights.

Some of the tales are slightly erotic, and the British translator Richard Burton was even accused of pornography when he first published them. But also science-fiction and horror elements are included. Take for example the story of the ‘Murdered young woman’, where a fisherman discovers a chest with the corpse of a young girl inside…cut into pieces. Or the story “The Adventures of Bulukiya”, where the protagonist travels through the galaxy, and explore stars and planets on his search for the herb of immortality.

But this is not what we think about when we imagine the stories of 1001 nights. We like to think about the more romantic and captivating tales. Palaces in the desert, where beautiful women in colourful dresses dance under the light of the moon. Bustling cities surrounded by sand and palm trees, mysterious dark princes and busy market places.
